SMC GIVES LOCAL BILLIARDS A BOOST

WHAT better way to usher in the coming World Pool Championships than to enliven the local billiards scene for both participants and spectators as the country gears up for the so-called Olympics of billiards in November. Long-time supporter San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is sponsoring four billiards events in cooperation with Bugsy Promotions under Perry Mariano and Raya Sports for the three months starting September. Aside from the SMC 1st All-Pinoy Scotch Doubles Championships that started last night and lasts until tomorrow at the Elbow Room for the Metrowalk, SMC also backed the SMC Skins Games from October 18-19 at the Bugsy's Lair in Timog, Quezon City and SMC Celebrity Poker Pool from November 22-24 again at the Elbow Room at Metrowalk under Bugsy Promotions. Raya Sports, for its part, is tasked with discovering new billiards stars with the Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) first-ever Philippine National Junior Championship set from September 21-23 at the Rizal Memorial Billiards Center. The Scotch Doubles tournament, which has a knock-out format, owes its prominence to huge cash prize of P200,000 and the presence of top cue artists like WPC champion Ronato Alcano, Dennis Orcollo, Lee Van Corteza and Jharome Pena, who will form part of the thirty-two (32) doubles teams. The Skins Games is the billiards variation of the popular Skins Game of Golf while Celebrity Poker Pool will use a deck of cards on the side.
